This is the time of year when my clients like to reflect and FOCUS on the direction for the year ahead. A large part of accomplishing goals is being focused on where you are headed and how you plan to get there. That includes a daily focus on actions and practices that will move you in the direction you desire to go.
While I get to dig deep with my clients into almost a dozen FOCUS practices, here are 5 you can consider as you prepare for 2025:
1. Set SMARTER goals:
Clearly define your goals using the SMARTER criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound, Evaluate, Re-Adjust). This approach provides clarity and motivation. Research shows that specific goals enhance performance and lead to higher achievement (Locke & Latham, 2002).
2. Prioritize Tasks with the Eisenhower Matrix:
Use the Eisenhower Matrix to categorize tasks based on urgency and importance. This helps you focus on what truly matters and allocate your time effectively, reducing stress and increasing productivity (Covey, 1989).

3. Practice Mindfulness:
Incorporate mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep-breathing exercises, into your daily routine. Mindfulness has been shown to improve concentration and cognitive flexibility, leading to better focus on tasks (Zeidan et al., 2010).
4. Implement Time Management Techniques:
Adopt the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working in focused intervals (typically 25 minutes) followed by short breaks. This method can enhance focus and productivity while preventing burnout (Cirillo, 2006).
5. Reflect Regularly:
Engage in regular self-reflection to assess your progress toward your goals. This practice not only helps you identify what’s working and what isn’t but also reinforces commitment to your objectives (Schön, 1983).
By applying these strategies, you can enhance your focus and effectively set yourself up for future success.
